Yes it is upon us once again. Seems like yesterday I had snot a flowin', legs a crampin', and lungs a gaspin'. Wait a minute, it was the other day. Because the other day, the Davidson Polar Bear ride took place. I was a little humbled. At about mile marker 43 or so I asked myself: "Where does my heart my now?" Na, na, na, na, na, I'm popped. Do you see where I went there? As a music snob I have guilty pleasures. Thank you Celine, you helped me cope with the moment I was popped. For a winter training, clear my throat, cough, cough, swerve to the left to spit, make that winter race. I felt pretty good. Considering that was the first time I had been on the bike in weeks! Swerve left, finger on nostril blow out the green stuff and hot air. If you are reading this there is a good chance you are a cyclist. If you are a cyclist you know that standard excuse all too well. It's better than, "my brakes were rubbing" or "my coach told me to take it easy today". That's when I respond with "Shut the front door!" In all honesty, I feel good about where I'm at the moment. I'm refreshed from my hiatus. My hair has grown out. Both on my cabeza and my legs. I have been on the bike facing the elements and in my basement. My playlists have gotten me through this tough stretch. I have several playlists I have created for my suffering. They all serve a different purpose. I even have a playlist I made for the ride home from work. It is entitled "Get ya mind right son". It's purpose? Under no circumstance must it allow me to talk myself out of getting on the trainer. Celine has no place in these playlists. The ride home is a mofro. I said Mofro! One of my favorite bands. I'm too clever for the status quo, mofro. We all have a love/hate relationship with our trainer. I actually tell my trainer that I hate it. It is unfazed by my remarks. It just gives me the silent treatment. I hate it's guts, but damn it, I respect it. Sometimes a void grows between the bike and me, my Kinetic is the link. I'm thankful for that. I'm glad to get back at it. It's great to see my teammates and the whole racing crowd again. Charlotte is a great cycling community and the local racers are part of that. I know some time has passed since my last blog. As a blogger I treat my blog like the Beatles treated albums. It takes time to come up with good material. So I treat a blog like an album not a mixtape. In saying this, you may not like my material. If that's the case, well, go listen to Lil Wayne or Nickleback for all I care. So far 2012 Will Smith is ahead of 2011 Will Smith. In fact 2012 Will Smith ran into 2011 Will Smith at a coffee house in NoDa a couple weeks ago. .

The scene: It's a cold damp day in NoDa. 2012 Will Smith rushes in to get a morning fix. He orders a skinny latte and a bran muffin. To his surprise he runs into 2011 Will Smith, who is enjoying a large mocha with whip cream and chocolate chip muffin.

2012: Hey, fancy seeing you here 2011 Will Smith!

2011: Fancy?

2012: A little phrase I picked up while in Ireland last year.

2011: Did ye find your pot of gold?

2012: No but I gained about 5 lbs from Guinness and Scones. Don't worry the race season burned it off. Hey speaking of that, hows that 9000 calorie breakfast treating you Willie Wonka?

2011: So we got jokes this morning do we?

2012: We lost a little weight while racing but we didn't lose our wit. Don't get your spandex in a wad.

2011: You think you're better than me with your skinny latte and your cardboard muffin. What are you like a tree hugger now? When you are not riding your bike I bet you are doing things like pointless protests like Occupy Wall Street.

2012: Why are you saying like so much? One thing is for sure.

2011: Yeah, what's that?

2012: Judging by what your enjoying at the moment, you need to occupy a bike seat.

2011: Well, your still pale. In fact you look oddly pale.

2012: Not only are we a smarter racer, we are also more health conscious with everything. Especially the sun, I always lather up with protection.

2011: So that's why you lost weight?

2012: I don't follow where you are going.

2011: You lost 5 lbs so you could put 5 lbs of sunblock on and still be somewhat fast.

2012: Ha! That is hilarious 2011 Will Smith. I'm laughing with you! One last thing though, I may be somewhat fast, but it's faster than you. That it is all. Have a nice day.

2011: Yeah but.......

2012: That is all, I've won this exchange.

With that they went their separate ways both eager to prove the other wrong. If there is one thing they have in common it's that they are both hard headed. Now that I think about it, they both have blonde hair. They are both pale. Have exceptional taste in music. Wow they are very similar.

Winter is a tough time for everyone, including cyclists. Winter is like that weird guy in lurking in the corner of the room. He definitely makes you a bit uncomfortable. Winter makes it difficult for my bicycle and I to tango. It's tough to make room for Winter. Is it possible to tango with three?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuc6fMj_Rsg

It just causes tension. It's tough to deal with for sure. Don't hold it against your bike. Work it out and get on with your relationship once again. Even if you ended on a bad note, it's never as bad as it seems. For those of you still not convinced, I want to share another true story that recently happened.

It was another cold dark day. I get home and my bike is there to confront me. If it had arms to cross and a foot to tap it would've.......well you get the picture. I was on my way to the fridge to grab some comfort and she was there to confront me. She had the audacity to dig deep in my drawers and pull my racing jersey out. Her goal? Make me feel guilty. No, she wasn't going to win this time, I was convinced. One of my favorite Seinfeld episodes was on:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16yKjz3mfHg

She had already turned the TV off. She was in control. She met me in the middle and agreed we could talk about this over a bottle of wine. I'm more of a beer guy but again, she was in control.

I don't know if it was the alcohol or her stunning looks. I was losing and she was beginning to change my mind. She's a good listener.

Well, the hard liquor had to come out. She called me out for turning the wrong way in Salisbury. She blamed me for the wreck in Winston Salem. We compromised about the incident in Albemarle. That's when she said it. "Say what you need to say." That I did.

Every self-defining moment deserves music. I did most of the talking, she just kept looking at me. This is the music that coincided with the following dialogue:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pDxoj-tDDIU&ob=av2e

There were rides when the wind was so cold
My hands and toes felt so dead
And in my head I kept asking
Why the hell am I not in bed

There were rides when the sun was so cruel
That all my sweat turned to salt
Tastes good on fries but burns my eyes
My mouth tastes like leather

I finished caring after that last left
And I do remember where, when and how
And with a single wish my tan lines did fade

But when you touch me like this
And I ride you like that
I blush and must admit
That it's all coming back to me now
When I touch you like this
And you hold me like that
Once again I do believe and
It's all coming back to me
It's all coming back to me
It's all coming back to me now

There were moments we were bold
Just like Lycra we were so tight
There were times I swore you a Schwinn
Cause I accidentally turned right
There were rides of endless pleasure
Breathe heavy, all I can scream is wow
Baby Baby Baby

If I miss you like this
And if you linger like that
You cost me my ego
But it's all coming back to me now
If I want you like this
And If I need you like that
You felt like lead and I was slow
But it's all coming back to me
This pleasure how I missed
And it's all coming back to me now
My smooth legs went AWOL
But it's all coming back to me now
But it's all coming back

There was lots of sweat stinging my eyes
And whenever you would hurt me
I would neglect you
And ride your steel sister

There were rides I fell off like a cheap toupee
When we were alone you made me feel like Lance
But now that seems like never

It was no mystery that you made my quads so freaking sore
And I gave up shaving to fulfill my manly vow
I refused to think of our times way back when

But if you touch me like this
And if you hold me like that
I forget my ego
And it's all coming back to me
If I ride you like this
And I stroke you like that
Blonde hair in the wind
And it's all coming back to me now
It's all coming back to me
It's all coming back to me now

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I'm wrapped. Can't help it

2012 will be fun. Let's clip in and begin. Beast Mode. Out like Neon Spandex.

Cycling is about sacrifice. Sometimes we have to sacrifice things like listening to "It's All Coming Back to Me Now" 25 times in a row for inspiration. It seems like yesterday I had butterflies in my stomach and lactic acid in my legs in that first race. Well the lactic acid came and went but the butterflies migrated throughout the season. I would like to take time to reflect on our season and the things we've learned. I know I've been slack. My mind has been busy going in circles for the past couple of months. My creativity has been bogged down due to my concerted efforts to turn in particular directions. Left turn. Because after a season of racing you kind find yourself thinking your racing all the time. Sharp left, watch that manhole! They're always in the middle of the best line! So while you're reading this here blog please pardon me if I blurt out like Greta the GPS. I tend to name electronic devices and bikes. On the subject on GPS. I have a complaint. Where is my girl with the Southern Accent!? I can picture my Southern Belle in a Lilly dress and sun hat blessing me with sweet directions. I'm tired of Nasal Nancy from where it's always cold and the people are always rude. What's my other choice? Old Cyber Connie. "Ahead. Turn. Right. On. In.de.pen.dence. Bou.le.vard." Thanks Connie, you sound like a 1982 robot. Until I get my Southern Belle, I'll stick with Betsy the Brit. I picture myself as 007 as she talks to me. I have a name picked out for my future Southern Belle GPS. You can try to guess. I'm not giving all of my secrets away. Oh ok, I'm not good at keeping certain secrets. Her name is Loretta. Her age is always 22, saves my time like water falls and gives me directions like I want her to. She gets me there as I listen for a while, her sweet southern voice makes me smile. To all of my North of the Mason Dixon line friends. I know you have a sense of humor. If you didn't you probably wouldn't be reading this much less be my friend. To all you robots out there, well, Neo ain't got nothing on me. I'll matrix your face. Right turn, oohhh, double apex at that.....watch your line, watch your line, watch you line, don't scuff, don't scuff, and through the corner. Sorry can't help it. On both counts. My tendency to name possessions and my race outbursts. It's probably a good thing the offseason is here. When I drive down 74 in the morning I actually visualize it as a race sometimes. Not speed wise, position wise. A racer's position is one of the most important factors in a race.

On my way to work lately I've been jockeying for position with Harriet the hamster lady. Harriet drives a Kia/Hyundai/Geo/Roller Skate. She has one of those family stickers on her back window. Don't get me started on those stickers. Those things are driving liabilities. Soccer moms are trying to top each other with their sticker count. Kind of like the "Honor Roll" stickers. Innocent drivers will become distracted in trying to count and decipher each stupid sticker. As I passed Harriet for the first time I noticed that her sticker was different from the other stupid ones I've seen . It was hard to make out. I could make out one human and a bunch of small stickers. Slowing, slowing, stopping, stopping, stopped. So there we were side by side at the red light. I glanced to my left and her love for small creatures was confirmed. She had three hamster wheels on her dash with fake hamsters in them. I assume they were fake. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say...... Ok, I'm done with assumptions for Harriet. I don't want it to go to far. Harriet is a real person. I did give her that name though. Harriet is a slow driver. Gets in my way on the way to work. If I get behind her, the more lights I hit, school buses, other hamster ladies, old people on the way to Hardees, just pretty much people that aren't great drivers. So I must stay in front of Harriet. It's less work to stay in front of her. I don't have to speed or take a bunch of chances. Keep it steady and I can dictate the pace. Being behind Harriet is like being behind a guy with thinning bibs. You've got to know the status of your bibs! Friends don't let friends wear thinning bibs. There is no secret formula to rescue those dingy bibs. Quit being cheap and buy some new ones. I'll call you out unless I don't consider you a friend, but still I don't want to see that vertical horizon. I'll just stay in front of you. In my case please tell me if something transparent leads to something apparent. For those of you that ignore this courtesy Chris Carter has something to say to you at the 40 second mark:

Clickage: C'mon Man!

C'mon Man! I mean c'mon MAN! Nobody wants to see that!

First lesson you learn when you race: Stay in the front. Yes, it's not always easy but if you want to be competitive you have to be near the front. In the back the accelerations are more frequent and you will eventually succumb to the yo yo effect. Depending on who is up front dictating the pace the yo yo can start at any time. I think a few of us have been guilty of this? I've been on both sides and God willing I want to be in the front. Being in the back is like being dunked in a pool over and over again. It sucks. Or it's kinda like getting ahead of yourself when you're stomping grapes. Better be careful or this may happen:

Clickage: Grape Lady

Hmm yeah, I think she is hurt. I'm not poking fun, this was me in Albemarle this year. I did my moaning in private though.

Learning the ins and outs of racing takes time, I still have a ton to learn. It's just like anything else, the more experience, the better you get .You learn how to keep position, take corners, rub shoulders, rub wheels, rub handlebars, rub asphalt, and rub the lactic acid out of your legs. One thing stays the same. You will suffer. Yes, it gets easier and there are those of us that are better at suffering than others. That's what competitive cycling is, a suffer fest. You do learn how to suffer. The first 10 minutes and the last 5 minutes are the toughest. If you're suffering, you're not alone. Yep, that dude beside you just puked on your new cleats. Thank you Carlos. You can find comfort in the discomfort around you. One, it's a good feeling to push through that pain and finish strong. Remember try to moonwalk and not to look like this:

Sweet Fancy Moses!

Two, like I said you are not alone. Everyone is uncomfortably numb. Probably in more than one area. Hey it happens. If the guy beside you looks like he's doing his best Joe Cocker impression, steer clear. Which inspires a little tune:

Seems my face is turning a shade of green

Belushi and Spandex would make a interesting combination.

Cause every lap I'm steady wheezing

Not enough breath to count to ten

Turing crazy like Charlie Sheen

Heart and mind not on the same team

Someones mopped my floor and stole my glee

Lactic acid, my legs need some help

Lactic acid, ain't feeling to good myself

Racing like anything is filled with peaks and valleys. From road rash to climbing on top of that podium, I experienced it all. Like a single race you will your results may yo yo. You won't peak all of the time nor will you spend every race on the asphalt. Cycling is definitely a unique sport. Unique in many ways but like most others it is a team sport. It is hard to explain this to people outside of the sport. Until you're on a group ride you can't really understand drafting. The rider in the front is doing most of the work. Depending on where you are sitting behind him you could be exerting up to 30 percent less effort. This is the most obvious team aspect of cycling. At the amateur level you don't see much team tactics. It does happen. When it does good things happen. Just scroll down the page and look at the results. I've had a blast this year learning how to race. I've had even more fun racing with and as a team. That's how we roll. This is how we do it. That's the way we get by. Whatever you want to call out. That's how Beast gets down. Is our teamwork perfect? No. Pretty damn skippy though. Is our team chemistry perfect? I'd call it a 9.56. I regularly rate things on a 1 - 10 basis. Here are a couple of examples to help you get a feel for my scale.

On a toughness scale. Guy on a Buffalo, got to give him a 10. That's a bad dude right there. We may now be able to trace Chuck Norris's genealogy now.

Clickage: Guy on a Buffalo!

To my lady readers out there, the answer is yes. I'm a man I can't help it, I've got a scale for you gals as well. I'm gonna keep it short because if you remember last time I got my blog and my dating headline mixed up. She shall be attractive in many ways. Have exceptional taste in music and she can be the bread winner, that's fine with me. Be a strong cyclist, but not quite as strong as me. I'm a man, I have pride. Oh and one more thing. Witty and sarcastic please. Don't you think I need some balance in my life? I think I could use some more. Perfect 10 right there, for me.

A couple of examples of a 1:

Fran Dreschers voice
Getting the breath knocked out of you like the Grape lady
Nickelback

So now that you understand my rating scale let me get back to my point. The reason we were very successful this year was because of our team dynamic. Beast Racing is truly a team from top to bottom. To borrow a cliche, there is no I in team but it still takes individuals to make up a team. We've got a great mix of individuals on Beast Racing. When you ride week in and week out with your teammates you form a bond. Suffering together forms unity. That's why our team works so well and have been successful. You are much more likely to help one of your teammates. This happened time and time again this year. We plan on continuing this in 2012. Several of us have moved up in categories and we hope to add a few more members for next season. I will recap our season in the next entry.

Why We Do the Things We Do

So, are you still humming the magnificent tune "Some Say I Shaved My Legs"? How did that go for you? I see it got me one more follower. Hey, baby steps. Even though I know there are few of you enjoying my thoughts and ramblings. Well, I hope that's the case. I have a couple goals for this entry. I may venture into some new territory here. I'm still gunning for laughs and smiles. I like to think of myself as a versatile guy, kinda like an all rounder on the bike. You may be able to dance your way up any climb but if you can't time trial.............well, just ask the Schlecks. How about Thomas Voeckler? I don't think I can ever cheer for a French guy but hats off, the dude is tough. Most people that follow cycling have heard the phrase "dancing on the pedals." Alberto Contador would be like Michael Jackson. The man can straight moonwalk up a mountain. Watching Thomas Voeckler climb up a mountain is kinda like watching this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xi4O1yi6b0

Sweet fancy Moses! On the bike let's just say, I'm an aspiring all-rounder, a work in progress. Ok, back to my intentions for this entry. I'm gonna get a little deeper, a little philosophical. You may get goose bumps or even shed a tear. I want to compare cycling to life as we know it. Take you inside the mind of an endurance athlete. So let's go beyond the spandex and behind the music.

If you are a cyclist in any capacity you probably have been asked: "Why do you ride a bike?" I do get this question quite a bit. It would probably be in my Top 10 questions Will gets asked. Probably towards the bottom of the list. Number one is: "Your name is really Will Smith?! Can you get jiggy wit it? I bet you get that question alot. I can't believe your name is Will Smith!" To combat this, I have several responses. Try me. Ok, back to the first question. "Why do you ride a bike? Why would anyone want to ride for hours on the bike? I don't see the point." The same reason you sit in a tree stand for 8 hours waiting on Bambi. The same reason you watch fast cars go around the same circle for 500 laps. The same reason you go to the mall just to go the mall. The same reason you go to hip hop dance class. The same reason you work on your antique car for hours. It makes you feel good. It is a since of accomplishment. It is human nature. The want and need to feel good that is. I'm not trying to speak for all cyclists and endurance athletes but I think we have one thing in common. We push ourselves to the limit yearning for that natural high. We embrace challenges and usually have a goal in front of us. Calvin Coolidge once said "Persistence and Determination alone are omnipotent." I have the complete quote hanging on my wall. Thanks Mom and Dad. I read it all the time. I relate it to life, work, relationships and cycling. At least President Coolidge left us with some inspirational words to hang on our wall. He's probably on down the list to make his way on to Mt. Rushmore but hey, maybe he rode a bike? Google it.

Cycling and music go hand in hand for me. They both give me peace of mind. When I'm on my bike by my lonesome I don't need music though. It clears my head better than anything else. To be honest with you riding outside while listening is really not safe. Just my opinion though. From a little joy ride to a competitive race, it's all therapy. Push yourself up that hill, feel a little pain. It will wash away all the worries away for a little while. Because sometimes being uncomfortable actually brings comfort. Just like a mountain century life brings peaks and valleys. If you want to be successful as an endurance athlete, mental toughness is a must. With individual sports it may be the most important asset, especially endurance sports. No pain..........I'm not one to be to cliche. A swell music friend of mine recently introduced me to a song that sums up cycling pretty well. I will put my touch into it because that's what I do.

And sometimes I feel six feet under

And sometimes I wanna scream loud as thunder

Sometimes I know your legs are crampin' and shakin'

I'm crawling up this climb and the hot sun is bakin'

Finishing on my mind

Just fight through the distance and the time baby

Persistence and determination will always overcome suffering. One's hopes and dreams will always push away pain and regret. If you find yourself in a valley, it's only temporary. Just take each switchback one by one. It may take time, but time you have. Certain peaks take longer to climb and some are able to make the climb faster. If your climb takes longer, it doesn't make it any less significant. It could take six months, a year, or even five years. Perseverance and patience will smooth out the road. This is why I believe cyclists are well suited to face the obstacles and challenges that life throws at us. Suffering teaches us to persevere. Your dream may be race, career or maybe even relationship related. That finish line might be 100 miles or five years away. A steady cyclist will conquer each hill, curve and descent. They know how to focus the entire ride and also keep their eyes on the prize. Speaking of the prize. I kinda dig a girl with a short skirt and a long jacket, a yellow one at that. Has a mind like a diamond, fingernails that shine like justice, and of course good dividends. As far as myself I like sunsets and long walks on the beach. Wait a minute. Damn, am I still blogging? I was listening to Cake "Short Skirt Long Jacket" thinking I was writing my online dating profile. My tab button must be stuck. Be careful when it comes to juggling cycling and dating. Well to late now. Maybe someone reading might appreciate it.

Each ride brings something new and sometimes you have to take a chance and turn down a new road. For your sake I hope it's full of beautiful climbs and fast descents. A straight flat road is no fun. It may seem safer but it's definitely not as fulfilling. You must be willing to be uncomfortable to make the climb. If you always stay within your comfort zone, you will never win. Whether it's moving far away or deciding to go on a attack, it's all about chances. Chances are what you make of them. There will be certain peaks that will be harder to climb and you don't always know the outcome. Ever turn down a road and wonder why you did it? It's human nature. Odds are you are heading down that path for a reason. Leave doubt behind and commit to it. In life there are no dead ends, just switchbacks. Sometimes steep, but they are all achievable. Just like life as we know it. I always like to think, there's hope for me yet.

Ok, pep talk time is over. On to Beast racing news. The team has had quite a first year of racing. Each and everyone of our teammates has found success this year. The biggest week of the season is almost upon us. Yes that's right, Crossroads my friend. The Blue and Gold will be there, rolling in the deep. All the other teams with the different kits, better ride, better ride, out ride our bikes. It's been quite a year for me and yes I finally found some success in Asheville. It was a great feeling. It was almost the perfect ending. If I had wrote the script I probably would have made a couple changes. Here goes:

As soon as I crossed the finish line cue some music:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xl_F74xBvkk

The team would line up and we would break it in a dance. You know kinda like one of those corny sappy eighties movies. Of course there would be some women in there. No Canadians though, I doubt they have rhythm. Of course there has to be a romantic interest. So make it a lady I've been chasing for a while. You can even cast me as an overachieving nerd, anything to add drama. She gives me my medal and then well you know.......

We have been extremely busy racing this summer. Allow myself to reintroduce myself. My name is Will Smith, some call me the Fresh Prince of NoDa. I am the former Fresh Prince of Unionville. I moved into the city, shaved my legs and started racing. A man with shaved legs faces many obstacles in life. Things like razor burn, weird looks, and cravings for wine coolers. Wait a minute, that's Brian. Canadians are always good scape goats. I'll take my chances in NoDa, just walk down North Davidson on a Friday night. Nothing is considered normal in those parts, which is cool.

So since the last post many things have happened. I made my way across the pond to Ireland. In the two weeks I spent over there, many calories were consumed and a lot of craic was had. Ireland is an amazing country. I can't say enough about the people, scenery, music, culture, and Guinness. Yes, I said craic. Craic is a Irish term that means fun. I hope I caught you off guard, because it definitely made me lift a eyebrow. I did get to ride over there. The first day I rented a glorified Huffy on the Aran Islands. It was pretty much my only choice. I proceeded to take the machine around the island up to Dun Aengus Fort. This fort is about 2500 years old. The leisurely ride turned competitive for me. I couldn't help it. It was Tuesday, so I felt the need to hammer. So I was passing everyone in sight. All walks of life. Many nationalities. I chanted USA the whole time. I even gave a German guy" the look" as I passed him. Just kidding.

<img border="0" height="240" i$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rvTUYiLY3qc/TgPxunj9uzI/AAAAAAAAADU/zz3ButeULq4/s320/irish+blog+1.jpg" width="320" />

Guinness + Fish n Chips = Machine

<img border="0" i$="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TY85gYdwQ-Q/TgfCmaEFWJI/AAAAAAAAADY/8a4jOBfQ2M8/s1600/Beast+Racing+2.jpg" />

Dingle Peninsula

The Irish are so nice and pleasant that it wears off on everyone. Even though I'm a pretty well mannered gentleman to begin with. My Mother insisted that take a etiquette class as a young lad. I do open doors, I put my grocery cart up, say yes mam, use proper traffic signals on the bike, put the toilet lid back down, put my napkin in my lap and if I like you I will let you suck my wheel for a bit. I do occasionally get the salad fork mixed up with the dinner fork. Nobody is perfect. I did upgrade the bike once I got to Killarney. I wasn't lucky enough to get drops but I did get a Specialized touring bike. The Irish country side/coast is unbelievable. The green hills roll right into the ocean. I love Union County but it can't compete with Dingle Peninsula or The Gap Dunloe when it comes to scenery. I do wish I had some of my teammates with me to share some pulls into some nasty headwinds. Irish Headwind > Union County Headwind. Riding through the Gap of Dunloe was breathtaking both literally and for real doh. Not terribly steep but I had to deal with 50 - 60 mph gusts.

<img border="0" height="216" i$="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2HaL_k7bvJA/TgfENYI4qYI/AAAAAAAAADc/9mJp5Qbxwn4/s320/Irish+blog+2.jpg" width="320" />

Gap of Dunloe

I was in Ireland for 12 days and only rode for 2.5 days. The Huffy ride actually counted against me. Call me a bike snob if you must. I frequented pubs a little more and where as Guinness is much better in Ireland it still doesn't motivate you to ride. Hey, I was there for that. Besides it only took me two weeks to ride it off. That's not that bad, is it? Remember the last blog when I told you how much I loved music? I know it seems like an eternity ago Mr. Moody. Getting these T-Rex arms to type a blog is like pedaling up Caesars Head with ankle weights on. Your cruel joke is what I think about as I train in my basement while listening to Death Metal. Ok, so the Irish love music. It is so enriched into their culture and part of everyday life. Go to the pub drink a Guinness and listen to some music. They have plenty of traditional music they call their own but they also have an appreciation for American artists. I heard Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" more than any other song. When they played the traditional Irish drinking songs, they all sang in unison. I welcomed the opportunity to walk into a bar and hear this kind of music. I went two weeks without hearing a Lady Gaga or a Pit Bull song. A "music snob's" heaven. I want to clear a misconception. Yes there are tons of pubs in Ireland. This is their culture, they are not in there getting wasted all of the time. You go to the pub have a pint or two and socialize with your friends. You don't see people taking shot after shot trying to get loaded like here in the States. It was a very refreshing scene. One of the songs I heard each night was "Some Say the Devil is Dead", listen to the lyrics and you can see where it is a great pub song. So I want you to go take a listen and read the lyrics.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GfTRMttapDc

So, you're welcome. I hope it is in your head for the rest of the day. Maybe you can river dance around your office while you sing it. It may help you get through the day. I would be careful with a few of the lines around certain people. So why did I direct you towards this song? Not only am I semi-talented cyclist, I dabble as a lyricist as well. I've loved music all of my life but not until recently did I discover this talent. Funny how you discover hidden talents. So here for the first time on the Beast Racing blog:

Some Say I Shaved My Legs - Will Smith

Some say I shaved my legs, shaved my legs, shaved my legs

Some say I shaved my legs and lost my man card

More say he rode again, rode again, rode again

And joined the Beast Racing Team

Shave the legs and sport spandex. sport spandex, sport spandex

Shave the legs and sport spandex, early in the morning

Lube your leg up, really Will? really Will? border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I've already copyrighted this. I'm collaborating with Lady Gaga and Kenny Rogers in hopes they will fancy everyone with a duet.

On the Beast racing front, we have been very busy. The season is still progressing with lots of success. I will will discuss this in further detail later this week. Since I've been gone I have concocted a couple blog entry's. I'm about to make it rain.

Do you hear what I hear?

There are melodies in everything, including cycling. When it's in rhythm, it is a beautiful thing. I love the sounds of a peloton. From the clipping in at the start to the heavy breathing on that last mile. The melodies can be ever-changing just like an eclectic playlist on iTunes. I love cycling, it's a drug for me. Odds are it is for you too, since you are taking the time to read this. Another drug of choice for me is music. I have a confession to make. If I had to choose between the two, I would choose music. Thankfully the two can coexist in my life. I see music in everything with regards to life. So not only do they coexist, they reflect one another in certain ways. At least for me they do. A smooth and continuous pace line is like Beethoven's 5th. A guy that bounces all over the place with his derailleur rubbing is like a Ke$ha song. So if you like Ke$ha, well can't help you there. These are just examples and a matter of opinion. Remember when I said I was the most open minded opinionated person you'd ever meet? Well when it comes to music and cycling, let's just say "I won't back down." Please have a seat and take the time to digest the material I'm about to spit. There will be many references and songs mentioned. Let's get it............started.....wiiitth my blog.

My iPod is kinda like a crit. It is all over the place. From Sinatra to Metallica, it's on there. Though in Cat 5 races once the gun sounds it's pretty much Metallica the whole time. Get out your glow sticks because your heart thinks it's in a rave. So when you're sitting on the start line your heart rate is at a Enya pace. First lap in you are probably more like this...........................

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eDoJGwLOaA&feature=fvst

It's like one big guitar solo. There are those of us that are more gifted than others so they can keep the Enya heart rate. So while you feel like your trapped in a Death Metal song. They feel like this......................

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wpPk8qk3uQ

Yes, not only does their heart feel content, their cadence is as steady and smooth as Luther Vandross. With talent and experience comes smooth transitions. Those cyclists know just the right time to bust out the breakdown. Kind of like Elton John's "Funeral for a Friend".

On long rides my mind can be all over the place. I usually get a song stuck in my head. Last summer when I was slowly making my way up the Blue Ridge Parkway assaulting Mt. Mitchell I was being tortured by Lady Gaga. I think "Alejandro" played in my head the whole time. I missed my goal time by 20 minutes! I blame you Lady Gaga! Remember when you were a kid, playing in the yard, envisioning yourself in the Super Bowl? The 40! The 20! Touchdown! You commentate to yourself and you spike the ball. We all still do it in a certain way. You can see yourself winning that race, chasing the glory. You wouldn't compete it if you didn't believe there was a chance. So what song plays in your head? Think of all those great sports movies. There is always a jubilant song in there somewhere. How about this one..........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-7Vu7cqB20

Teeth gritting, veins popping to arms waving. Goose bumps yet?

On to team news. The Beast Racing team is now looking so fresh and so clean in our new jerseys! On behalf of the team I want to thank the sponsors! We will represent you well.

Not only do we have new jerseys. We have some new members as well. The fastest couple I know of in this area. John Patterson and Sonja Van Holderbeke are strong additions to our team. We will now have representation in the Masters 1 2 field and the Women's field. Strong representation that is! There are a couple songs that stand out here. For Sonja: "When the going gets tough, the tough get going". No she is not like a cheesy 80's song, she is just tough. I witnessed her finish a ride after a bad spill and a few broken ribs. Not just finish but ride 20 more miles. Needless to say she is a great addition to our team! John "Pulling at 23 mph never looked so easy" Patterson record speaks for itself. He can keep that Enya heart rate along with a Sade "Smooth Operator" cadence. Genetics and father time will keep our racing careers from intertwining. Which is fine with me. I've been able to enjoy a couple cookie rides pulled along by John. I can compare those rides to The Commodores "Easy". Thanks my man, 23 mph never felt so easy. For those of you racing against our new additions, get your glow sticks out! You're heart will be raving.

The team continues to enjoy success this year. We had strong representation in The Rock Hill Classic in both the Cat 5 and Cat 4 fields. The criterium course was pretty technical. The double apex turn was like a scratch on a record. Each time we passed there was a scuff. Yours truly was responsible for one. The team made it's presence known throughout the race. We stayed in the front and worked together quite nicely. A few of us laid down some attacks as well.

My man BK can't resist the urge to go fast. Here he is going for $5 prime/gift certificate to a Bike Shop 30 miles away. Sorry Brian, I couldn't resist. This is his attitude and it's great for the team. Today Brian I give you your very own theme song. When I see you this is the song that plays in my head..............

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-64CaD8GXw

Once again the team littered the top 20 with all 5 team members placing well. Mitch led the way by grabbing eighth. He turned around and did the same thing once again in the Road Race the very next day. My man is quietly making this the norm. As cool as the other side of the pillow. I have in fact given him his own theme song as well. His demeanor and cadence can softly hurt you. He gets the most modern version because I think he would prefer it over Roberta Flack's original..............

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YAEWrnOtrY

Which leads me to the next award winner. He is not the only Moody getting honored with a theme song. What happens when you wear your son's jersey on a Tuesday night ride and he catches you on Thompson? Mitch was strumming some pain for sure. Doing work, on everyone, including me. Jerseys come unzipped and tongues begin to wag. So Richard here is your song..................

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39YUXIKrOFk

Carlos is representing us very well in Cat 4. He came through with a top 5 finish in both the Crit and Road Race in the Rock Hill Classic. His cadence can make your heart flutter, in a bad way. Make your legs quiver, in a painful way. It's like riding up a hill with an auctioneer in your ear the whole time. Carlos, this is not your theme song. This song is torture for a lot of people so this is what you dish out...........

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddgyg_5FF_0

I have one more song to give out today. Don't let his Barry Manilow aura fool you the man is dangerous! He too, prefers to live dangerously. So Danger here is your song, let it ring! I feel the need for speed!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8rZWw9HE7o

The team was able to close April out in a strong way. We had strong participation in the Tour De Moore and Sanford Criterium. This led to strong finishes by several Beast Racers. The team is continuing to develop chemistry and sustaining success. The Assault on the Carolina was a nice change of pace but none the less very challenging. I think the "Crying Game" by Boy George was tortuing me on my way up Caesars Head. It was a great weekend to spend with teammates who are also friends. The teams new additions have brought great talent and experience. Most importantly great representation for Bicycles East. Come join us if you can for a Tuesday night ride at 6 pm! We still have alot to come this year. I think there is a little race this weekend, Dillworth maybe? The Beast Boys and Girl will be there in the blue and gold. Our jerseys are pretty sharp if I say so myself.

Did you think I would let myself off? Heres mine.............

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62ATUeRsotk

Rock Hill Classic

Cat 5 Crit

8. Mitch Moody
10. Brian Kennedy
16. Will Smith
17. Chris Haid
18. Tory Barbisan

Cat 4 Crit

4. Carlos Pinate

Cat 4/5 RR Masters

11. Danger

Cat 5 RR

8. Mitch Moody
17. Will Smith

Cat 4 RR

5. Carlos Pinate

Asheboro Criterium

Race 1

4. Ryan Phillips

Race 2

3. Ryan Phillips

Tour De Moore Road Race

Masters 50+

2. John Patterson

Womens Cat 3/4

10. Sonja

Cat 4/5

6. Carlos Pinate
13. Mitch Moody
25. Chris Haid
26. Danger
47. Sporting spandex and clipping in have become second nature for me. Shaving my legs, umm, not so much. I enjoy my masculinity, don't really want to add any more grooming to my daily schedule. I'll let the opposite sex worry themselves with these things. Yes I do think it's unattractive if you women have hairy legs. Just kidding. Who am I to judge? I work in a very blue collar field. I love my job and the HVACR industry is a great industry. Once customers hear that I am a cyclist, the jokes begin to fly. I am a good sport and one of the most open minded opinionated people you'll ever meet. I know that's an oxymoron. Kind of like saying "same difference". I have never understood that saying by the way. Back to my point. They usually begin to elaborate on their dislike of cyclists. So I go into salesman mode and begin to mediate. I'm confident in my ability to objectively defend cyclist. Because we are not perfect and we have to realize our place on the rode as well. Cyclist have our share of haters. Some have legitimate gripes others are just looking for someone to blame things on. Haters gonna hate. "Sorry sir that I just wasted 5 seconds of your time. McDonald's stays open 24 hours." Mutual respect is what's crucial in our relationship with drivers. Usually I can earn this through my negotiating skills. Which brings me to the title of this entry. Not quite sure if I'm good enough to explain shaving my legs. "I heard the guy can sale a ketchup Popsicle to a woman with white gloves. But can he explain why he shaves his legs?" This was the internal struggle that I faced.

Shaving yes, tanning bed no.

It's not that I didn't understand why it's necessary. Most racers shave and it didn't take long for me to realize first hand why it's necessary. Every time you clip in there is a chance you might wreck. These chances are slim and depend on several different factors. These chances do go up if you race for obvious reasons. I'm not a big NASCAR fan but I do know there is usually a wreck in every race. Rubbing is racing. This is not necessarily the case in cycling but there are some similarities. People are trying to win. You have to take risks to win. Risk taking at 25 mph shoulder to shoulder can get hairy. No matter how long you've been cycling this takes some getting used to. When wheels touch, cyclists and pavement usually meet. What comes next is "road rash". Google road rash images at your own risk. My first date with RR came a few weekends ago. The last lap, sitting pretty, wheels touch, wheels wobble and down goes cyclist. Down goes cyclist, down goes cyclist, down goes cyclist. Not quite as notable as "down goes Frazier" but the Albemarle tarmac left it's mark on me. Thankfully I was able to finish and there was a nice lady there with some antiseptic at the end. Antiseptic on a fresh wound is about like drinking straight moonshine. They both leave you with a hangover. Whereas Moonshine makes you feel bulletproof, antiseptic only leaves you with a burning sensation. We all know what they say about burning sensations. Crashing happens at all levels and that is why if you're a competitive cyclists you probably need to shave your legs. Road rash and hair don't mix. Road rash really doesn't mix with anything. Like your buddy that cannot mix a drink to save his life. If you would like to try it, strip down and do some asphalt angels. Then get back to me. I am no longer a novice when it comes to treating road rash. I was scared to shower, kind of like our neighbors across the pond. Only joking. Showers burn. Antiseptic can make a grown man cry. Sounds like a country song: "I had a Date with Road Rash" .

Tory was there to comfort me as I realized I must shave

Spraying antiseptic on the rash will bring mental toughness and some expletives. Getting ready for this is kind of like getting ready to max out on the bench press. I needed someone there to smack me in the face a couple times. When you are on the start line and everyone is sizing each other up. Are they checking out your bike or looking to see if your legs are shaved? Shaved or not, lactic acid is the only inhibitor when it comes to performance. So now you are wondering. Are my legs shaved? Why as of matter fact they are. I wear pants to work anyway.

Unleash the Beast!

So far 2011 has been fun and productive for Beast Racing! Before I begin to blog and expose my thoughts, I would like to brag on our results. We kicked off the season with a lot of success in the Greenville Spring Series. For most of us, this is our first season of racing. The team has started off with a bang. So while we learned the ropes of racing we managed to bag a few podium finishes! The weather was kind and the races were packed with talented and fast racers. Greenville is a huge cycling community and nestled right between Charlotte and Atlanta. Needless to say it was a great test for the Beast Racing Team. Several members rode strong, including our favorite Canuck, Brian Kennedy. Brian is becoming adept at finishing high, including a second place finish. He is becoming as dangerous as the Federal Government with his signature point.

The resemblence is scary.

If Skeletor was a cyclist, he would be in trouble.

My man Chris Haid took some time from his busy schedule of pulling the peloton and protecting Castle Greysckull to grab a podium finish. Chris hasn't been riding that long and just started racing. He will be an integral part of our team.

We continued our success in the Blythewood Omnium in Blythewood, SC. Mitchell Moody finished third overall in the Cat 5 Omnium. The "Quiet Killah" as I like to call him. This refers to his ability to quietly put pain into your legs. Thirty other cyclist witnessed and felt this on a hill in Blythewood, SC. As far as I'm aware he doesn't dabble in Hip Hop. If his rhyme spittin' is as fast and smooth as his cadence, move over Jay-Z. Mitch could become the first cyclist to cross the Hip-Hop Genre. Mitch had company at the front as all five Beast Racers finished in the Top 15 that day.

Last weekend the team competed in the Adam Little Memorial Race in downtown Albemarle, NC. We enjoyed a very productive and fun weekend of racing. Most of the team was able to participate and many took notice. The MC commented on Beast Racing more than once. Mr. Moody was grinning ear to ear. The Friday night race was very fast and packed with attacks and alot of action. It was a crowded field full of both Cat 4 and 5 racers. The "Vet" Jaime Kosofsky steadily and quickly led the peloton through the techinical course in the opening laps. Carlos Pinate, I've got to come up with a nickname, attacked the field in a impressive manor. This was a sign of things to come. The field was forced to take notice as Mitch and Ryan Phillips finished 2nd and 6th in a very crowded field. I have some names in mind for Ryan, need to narrow them down. He's like a combination of "The Road Runner" and "The Tazmanian Devil."

Richard's smile just got bigger.

On Saturday the team was a force once again in both the Cat 5 and Cat 4 races. The categorys were seperated for the 2nd day, my legs and lungs appreciated that. The team is continuing to improve strategy and develop chemistry. It was evident in the results once again as all five Beast Racers littered the Top 15 once again. I also learned why it is necessary to shave your legs. On the road to podium finishes a cyclist must overcome lactate acid and road rash. More to come on this later on. In the Cat 4 race my main man Carlos took third. Oh, and he was solo on this one. I'm excited to see what else he can do with some help.

More to come from this young man.

The Rock Hill Classic is next up on the first weekend of April.
